During the 2010 Rolex Grand Slam in Lexington, KY, United States of America, his horse appeared to slip at the 20th fence and suffered a rotational fall. He was treated by paramedics at the scene and then transferred by helicopter to hospital. He broke the top of his shoulder, cracked his collarbone and sternum, as well as fracturing four ribs.
