Foreign audiences not welcome in Tokyo

There have been persistent rumours before, but today the organising committee of the Olympic Games indeed confirmed that foreign audiences will not be welcome in Tokyo. There are great concerns about the Games, with polls showing that nearly 80% of Japanese want the event to be postponed or cancelled altogether. Banning foreign audiences is a way of meeting those concerns. Of course, thousands of athletes, coaches, staff and press will travel to the Japanese capital. The unrest among the Japanese population has therefore not been directly quelled by this decision. At the moment, foreigners are not allowed into the country at all, partly to prevent many athletes and their entourage from ‘exploring’ the country.
