In memory of Jon Doney, MBE

It is with huge sadness that we announce the death of Jon Doney, MBE. At the age of 13, Jon began putting together showjumping courses for his sister Jackie. It was the beginning of a remarkable career in the sport that led to him being selected as one of the judges for London 2012 and President of the Ground Jury at the recently postponed Tokyo Olympics. He had a long and significant relationship with the All England Jumping Course. After his initial course design training with June Nuttall, his father arranged for him to come to Hickstead to assist the late Pam Carruthers. Pam proved a wonderful mentor. With her assistance, he was able to go to Washington, New York, Toronto and subsequently to Spruce Meadows. On Pam’s retirement, he took over as Hickstead’s chief course designer, a position he held for many years until his switch to the judges’ box following a hugely successful European Championships in 1999. He has been President of the International Ground Jury for the past 9 years. Jon was unique in that he was the only person in the world to hold ‘O’ (Olympic) status in showjumping as both a course designer and judge. He also officiated at a host of World Equestrian Games, European Championships and Olympic Games. He is going to be sorely missed by us all, and we send our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Mary, and sister, Jackie, at this terribly sad time.
