Maikel van der Vleuten (NED) will not participate in the Tokyo Olympics next summer with his top horse Dana Blue. Dana Blue was severely injured in her knee at the show in Doha last week. The combination was a candidate for a medal in Japan.
“The vets are examining Dana Blue now,” says Van der Vleuten. “What is best, surgery or rest? We know from similar cases that horses can recover from this, in the sense that they are no longer unsound. Whether a return to top level is possible is very difficult to say now.”
“It was actually a very unfortunate fall in Doha,” Van der Vleuten looks back on the incident. “A miscommunication, a freak mishap with big consequences. It has turned out completely wrong. Tokyo is now completely out of the question for this horse. No, it is not easy. First Corona, then the horse virus, now this. Everything comes together, but we try to look further. The most important thing now is that the horse gets the best care. We are working on that.”
