Stud fees for scores of sport horse stallions from some of the top studs in Europe are being auctioned online this week to support two organisations handling human and equine relief efforts in Ukraine.
The German online auction platform horse24.com organised the charity effort, in which 112 stud fee vouchers donated by breeders throughout Europe are being auctioned off. All proceeds will benefit Berlin-based Doctors Without Borders and Equiwent, which provides food and assistance to humans and animals. The auction began March 20 and final bidding will take place March 27.
“The unbearable war images which we’ve been seeing daily in the media and via various channels left us in no doubt that we simply had to make a contribution: We want to give support to the Ukrainian equestrian community and to people in need,” horse24.com owner Simon Kohlenbrenner said, adding that the idea of using the potential of the auction portal, existing contacts, and the goodwill of the European equestrian scene to help assist Ukrainian horse owners and refugees in their life-threatening circumstances came about very naturally.
Participating donors include Paul Schockemöhle’s Lewitz Stud, Helgstrand Stallion Station, Studbook Zangersheide in Belgium and the stallion station of the Holsteiner Association. A full list of donors and stallions, as well as for instructions for registering to bid, is available on horse24.com.
All proceeds from the auction will be donated in full, without deduction of administrative costs, and divided equally between Equiwent and Doctors Without Borders, organisers said.
