Swedish jumping rider Henrik von Eckermann has announced the competitive retirement of his top mare Toveks Mary Lou (Montendro x Portland L). Von Eckermann writes on Instagram: “Of course I knew this day would come, but not so soon. Toveks Mary Lou was injured in Geneva in December 2019. After that, we gave her a long break. Everything looked promising, but the day before her scheduled competition return, it was again not good. She needs another year before we could make our comeback. Her owners and I have therefore decided to withdraw her from the sport.”
“I don’t have to explain what this mare has given me and what she means to me. This is not an end for me, but a chapter we are closing. I look forward to seeing Mary Lou in the next chapter as what I hope will be a great mother.” Von Eckermann and 15-year-old Mary Lou won team silver at the 2018 World Equestrian Games in Tryon (USA) and at the 2017 European championships in Gothenburg (SWE). They represented Sweden at the 2019 European championships in Rotterdam (NED) and in three world cup finals. The combination was also part of the Swedish team that won the nations cups in Aachen (GER) and Rome (ITA) in 2019.
In 2017 and 2018 they won the world cup on home turf in Gothenburg (SWE). Von Eckermann and Mary Lou won the Rolex Grand Prix in Windsor (GBR) and the Rolex Grand Prix in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (NED) in 2019. In the same year, they also snatched victory in the Longines FEI World Cup™ in Amsterdam (NED). On their beautiful palmares together there are also many podium finishes in the world’s most prestigious Grands Prix.
