Super Nova II, the British-bred Hanoverian gelding ridden by Spencer Wilton on Great Britain’s silver medal team at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and bronze at the 2018 Tryon World Equestrian Games, has been retired from the sport at the age of 18.
Super Nova (De Niro x Weltmeyer), owned by Jen Goodman, was also competed by Spencer at the 2017 European Championships and the team medal performances at the Olympics and World Games.
Spencer began competing Super Nova at Small Tour in 2013 when the horse was owned by Carl Hester and moved up to Grand Prix the following year.
At Big Tour, the pair had 42 starts, including 15 victories, with wins book-ending the debut Grand Prix in Barcelona, Spain Mar 20, 2014, and the finale at Keysoe, England Mar 14, 2020.
Spencer, who has had frequent back problems, told Horse & Hound: “I was hoping he would get another chance to represent Team GBR in 2021, but it wasn’t meant to be.”
Super Nova, he told the magazine, would get to do what he most loves: “Going out and eating grass.”
