That the FEI Jumping rules need an overhaul became clear this week. A press release from the FEI takes it even further into the bizarre. The regulations allow Cian O’Connor’s Kilkenny smeared with blood from his bleeding nose to continue and rank seventh on the results, but another rider has been disqualified. Cinca 3 was found to have blood on its flank afterward, and thus the horse of New Zealand rider Daniel Meech has been disqualified. The FEI reports that the horse was excluded under article 241.30: “Elimination under this article does not imply that there was an intention to injure the horse, but the rules are there to protect the welfare of the participating horses.”
